Port of Call: Belize City

Bordered between Mexico, Guatemala and the Caribbean Sea, Belize is a country repleted with natural attractions such as Mayan ruins, large cave systems and wildlife reserves.Formerly the Colony of British Honduras, Belize is the only country in Central America that has English as its official language, making it one of the friendliest destinations for English-speaking travelers. Although Belize is a relatively untapped tourist hub, the country is host to a never ending list of activities that include scuba diving, snorkeling, hiking through lush rain forests, zip-lining, cave exploration and tubing, world-class fishing and taking siestas on pristine beaches; there is something for every kind of traveler.

60-Second Geography

Belize

The birth place of chewing gum and Punta music, Belize, came under Mayan rule during the empire’s expansion over the Yucatan Peninsula and Central American highlands around 1500 BCE. The country became an independent Commonwealth in 1981, however Belize still retains Queen Elizabeth II as head of state, as it was previously a British colony. Although Belize was dominated by European forces for nearly 500 years, many aspects of its culture still persists. Because of this cultural preservation, visitors can truly enjoy the real Belize.

Cave exploration and cave tubing tours feature the newest and best cave-tubing equipment in Belize. Pools of sapphire blue water carry adventure seekers on an unbelievable journey through linked cave systems.

Goff’s Caye is one of the many cayes (islands) off the coast of Belize. Guests can take snorkel trip to the popular island. The 25-minute scenic boat ride takes you past numerous mangrove islands, which are natural habitats for cormorants, terns, and the fierce frigate bird. Snorkelers at Goff’s Caye can expect to see all sorts of underwater goodies!

  • Old Belize and New Belize is a landmark attraction for locals and tourist. At the heart of city is the Old Belize Exhibit, a stirring cultural and historical display that provides visitors with an intimate glimpse of Belize’s past. The city is also brimming with commerce and is home to the only manual swing bridge in the world, Swing by Bridge and the historic Fort George.

  • Altun Ha Mayan Ruins was once a model Mayan city, and served as a link for an important caribbean trade route running through the Yucatan. Upon reaching the site, visitors are greeted by 13 structures surrounding two plazas. Unlike many Mayan ruins which are unavailable for exploration, the Mayan ruins in Belize may be climbed and investigated, including the 60-foot temple of the Sun God
  • If staying grounded is more of you cup of tea, Jeep Safaris and Jungle Horseback adventures are a great way to experience the diverse ecosystem of Belize. Navigate through small communities and off-beat roads toward the famous countryside of Belize and wondrous ancient Mayan caves. Witness the odd-shaped mountains and visit the coast where Harrison Ford’s “Mosquito Coast’ was filmed.  If you prefer only one ‘horsepower’ in your transportation, travelers can trot or fast lope along canopies of cohune palms, while winding through vines cascading from tropical trees adorned with bromeliads.

ShoreTrips' shore excursions in Belize will get you off the beaten path of this popular Caribbean destination. Whether you are interested in tubing in caves, exploring the Lamanai and Altun Ha Mayan Ruins, or snorkeling the world's second largest barrier reef at Goff's Caye, we have you covered. Of course, if you'd prefer to take it easy on Cucumber Beach, favorite drink in hand, we're pleased to arrange that as well.
